L’annata appena conclusasi è destinata a rimanere nella storia del Millwall Football Club e dell’appassionata e caldissima fanbase del Sud di Londra.
E infatti, nonostante la sconfitta casalinga nella gara di ritorno della semifinale play-off contro l’Hull City abbia impedito ai Dockers (l’antico soprannome del Millwall, ispirato alle origini portuali del club) di raggiungere la finalissima di Wembley, la stagione da poco terminata è da considerarsi straordinaria in campo e fuori per una serie di ragioni di nodale importanza.
In primo luogo, il leasehold concesso al club dal council di Lewisham, che avrà la durata di ben novecentonovantanove anni (probabilmente un record nel panorama calcistico non solo inglese, ma mondiale) permetterà al Millwall FC di sviluppare tutta l’area intorno allo stadio The Den, attraverso una compiuta opera di riqualificazione e rigenerazione urbana a trecentosessanta gradi. Una precipua importanza verrà data all’edificazione di appartamenti con destinazione social housing e saranno oggetto di investimenti particolarmente ingenti anche le strutture che ospiteranno la sede del Millwall Community Trust e le sue attività filantropiche a servizio delle communities di South London.
Questa operazione di enorme impatto, che è stata portata a termine grazie al prezioso e instancabile lavoro del Presidente del Millwall FC James Berylson, del Managing Director Mark Fairbrother, del CEO del Millwall Community Trust Sean Daly, della Baronessa Brenda Dacres (ex Sindaca di Lewisham), del Lewisham Council e di tutto lo staff del Millwall e del Community Trust, favorirà anche la creazione di migliaia di nuovi posti di lavoro in una delle aree più complicate della capitale del Regno Unito. Tale operazione potrebbe favorire anche un ampliamento dello stadio e della sua capienza, attualmente fissata a poco meno di ventimila spettatori.
Inoltre, gli sforzi straordinari dell’allenatore Alex Neil e della squadra hanno permesso di raggiungere il numero più alto di punti della storia del club nel secondo gradino della piramide calcistica inglese. La vittoria per due reti a zero nell’ultima giornata di campionato contro l’Oxford United, in un The Den gremito in ogni ordine di posti e con lo splendido bandierone commemorativo in memoria del compianto e mai dimenticato Presidente John Berylson (venuto a mancare quasi tre anni fa), magistralmente realizzato dalla famiglia O’Mara, issato nel Dockers Stand, ha permesso al Millwall di totalizzare 83 punti e di chiudere la stagione a un solo punto di distanza dall’Ipswich Town, promosso direttamente in Premier League dopo un solo anno di assenza dalla massima serie inglese. Le prestazioni esaltanti della squadra hanno permesso di raggiungere la media spettatori più alta degli ultimi settantaquattro anni, con lo stadio che ha registrato il sold out in quasi tutte le partite casalinghe del campionato appena terminato.
In una stagione che ha visto il Millwall Football Club celebrare i suoi primi centoquarant’anni di storia (la sua fondazione avvenne alla fine dell’estate del 1885 sulla Isle of Dogs, nel cuore del vecchio porto di Londra) e il Millwall Community Trust festeggiare il suo quarantennale (la creazione del Trust avvenne nel 1985, nella stagione in cui ricorreva il centenario del club), lo stadio The Den ha visto la presenza di importantissime personalità. E infatti, l’annata 2025/26 si è aperta con la visita di Her Excellency Dame Marcella A. Liburd, Governor General di Saint Kitts and Nevis, accolta a South London da Mark Fairbrother, Sean Daly e dall’ex portiere del Millwall e della Nazionale Inglese Bryan King e dallo storico tifoso Eamonn Barclay.
Dame Marcella ha avuto modo di conoscere in prima persona le splendide iniziative del club e del Millwall Community Trust a supporto delle communities locali e ha consegnato anche un importante riconoscimento, teso a rimarcare la preziosa attività del Millwall e del Trust. Inoltre, in occasione del derby di campionato contro il Charlton, due illustri vincitori di Premi Oscar quali Sir Daniel Day-Lewis e Sir Gary Oldman hanno visitato The Den e assistito alla partita, nella quale il Millwall ha realizzato ben quattro reti contro i cugini del Sud-Est di Londra.
Va sottolineata, poi, la visita dell’Ambasciata Italiana a Londra allo stadio e al Millwall Community Trust. In tale occasione, il Ministro Riccardo Smimmo (Vice Capo Missione dell’Ambasciata), il Consigliere d’Ambasciata Umberto Bernardo (Primo Consigliere e Capo dell’Ufficio Economico dell’Ambasciata) e Neil Coyle MP (Parlamentare della Camera dei Comuni per la circoscrizione di Bermondsey e Old Southwark) hanno avuto modo di ascoltare una presentazione dettagliata del lavoro svolto dal Trust a servizio della popolazione locale, con precipuo riferimento alle giovani generazioni. Gli interventi di Sean Daly, Peter Garston (Director del Millwall) e Jason Vincent (General Manager delle Millwall Lionesses) hanno evidenziato iniziative d’importanza capitale, quali il Divert Officer, la Lions Food Hub e i programmi a supporto dei veterani dell’esercito. L’evento in questione è stato reso possibile anche grazie alla preziosa assistenza del media team, nelle persone di Max Mc Lellan, Mark Litchfield, Abbie Glover e Kai Bennett.
La stagione appena trascorsa ha prodotto risultati di enorme rilievo dentro e fuori dal rettangolo verde. La prossima annata vedrà un Millwall pronto nuovamente a combattere in ogni partita, per rendere sempre orgogliosi i suoi appassionati tifosi e per provare a riportare a South London una massima serie inglese che manca da ben trentasei anni.

A season to remember on and off the pitch
The just-terminated season is destined to remain in the history of Millwall Football Club and of its passionate and very enthusiastic fanbase from South London.
In fact, although the home defeat in the second leg of the play-off semi-finals against Hull City prevented the Dockers (Millwall’s old nickname, inspired by the club’s origins in the old London Docklands) from reaching the final at Wembley Stadium, the recently concluded season is to be considered extraordinary both on and off the pitch for a number of reasons of pivotal importance.
First of all, the leasehold granted to the club by Lewisham Council, which will last nine hundred and ninety-nine years (probably a record not only in English football, but all over the world), will allow Millwall FC to develop the entire area around The Den, through a comprehensive urban redevelopment and a huge regeneration project. A great importance will be given to the construction of apartments intended for social housing, and structures that will host the headquarters of the Millwall Community Trust and its philanthropic activities serving the communities of South London will also be the subject of particularly significant investments. This operation of enormous impact, which has been completed thanks to the valuable and tireless work of the Millwall FC Chairman James Berylson, of the Managing Director Mark Fairbrother, of the CEO of the Millwall Community Trust Sean Daly, of the Baroness Brenda Dacres (former Mayor of Lewisham), of the Lewisham Council, and of all the staff of Millwall Football Club and of the Community Trust, will also promote the creation of thousands of new jobs in one of the most challenging areas of the capital city of the United Kingdom. This plan could also facilitate an expansion of the stadium and of its capacity, currently set at just under twenty thousand spectators.
Furthermore, the extraordinary efforts of the manager Alex Neil and of the whole team made it possible to achieve the highest number of points in the club’s history in the second tier of English football. The two-nil victory on the final day of the league season against Oxford United, in a The Den packed in every seat and with the splendid commemorative banner in memory of the late and never forgotten Chairman John Berylson (who passed away almost three years ago), masterfully created by the O’Mara family and shown in the Dockers Stand, allowed Millwall to total 83 points and finish the season just one point behind Ipswich Town, who were promoted directly to the Premier League after just one year away from the top flight of English football. The team’s thrilling performances enabled the highest average attendance of the past seventy-four years, with the stadium recording sell-outs in almost every home match of the just-terminated season.
In a season that saw Millwall Football Club celebrate its first one hundred and forty years of history (its foundation took place at the end of the summer of 1885 on the Isle of Dogs, in the heart of the old London Docklands) and the Millwall Community Trust celebrate its fortieth anniversary (the Trust was created in 1985, the season in which the club’s centenary occurred), The Den hosted very important personalities. In fact, the 2025/26 season opened with the visit of Her Excellency Dame Marcella A. Liburd, Governor General of Saint Kitts and Nevis, who was welcomed by Mark Fairbrother, Sean Daly, former Millwall and England national team goalkeeper Bryan King, and lifelong fan and philantropist Eamonn Barclay.
Dame Marcella had the opportunity to personally learn about the club’s and the Millwall Community Trust’s wonderful initiatives in support of the local communities and also presented an important award, aimed at highlighting the valuable activity of the football club and of the trust. Furthermore, for the league derby against Charlton, two illustrious Oscar winners such as Sir Daniel Day-Lewis and Sir Gary Oldman visited The Den and attended the match, in which Millwall scored as many as four goals against their South-East London rivals. It should also be noted the visit of the Italian Embassy in London to the stadium and to the Millwall Community Trust. On this occasion, The Minister Riccardo Smimmo (Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy), the Embassy Counselor Umberto Bernardo (First Counselor and Head of the Embassy’s Economic Office) and Neil Coyle MP (Member of Parliament – Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency) had the opportunity to listen to a detailed presentation of the work carried out by the Trust in service of the local population, with particular reference to the younger generations. The speeches of Sean Daly, Peter Garston (Director at Millwall FC) and Jason Vincent (General Manager of the Millwall Lionesses) highlighted initiatives of crucial importance, such as the Divert Officer, the Lions Food Hub and the programmes supporting veterans. This event was also made possible thanks to the valuable assistance of the media team, and especially of Max Mc Lellan, Mark Litchfield, Abbie Glover and Kai Bennett.
The just-concluded season produced results of enormous significance both on and off the pitch. Next year will see Millwall ready to fight in every match once again, in order to always make its passionate fans proud and to try to bring back to SE16 the top-flight, that has been missing for thirty-six years.
